Selma Lagerlöf

Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940) is one of the great names of Swedish literature and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1909). For children she is above all the author of The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (1906–1907) — the story of a boy who shrinks to the size of a thumb and flies across Sweden on the back of a goose, together with the wild geese.

The book was originally written as a geography reader for schoolchildren, yet it became one of the most loved fantasy tales in Swedish literature. The landscapes, animals and people along the journey turn Sweden itself into a fairy tale.
