A small family in a mountain cabin shares the little they have with a mysterious stranger on Christmas Eve.
Deep in the Norwegian mountains, where the snow lay like a soft blanket over the landscape, a small family lived in a simple log cabin. The family, made up of a mother, a father, and little Anna, six years old, had been looking forward to Christmas, even though they didn't have much to celebrate with. The harsh winter had made it hard to find enough food, and even the woodpile was starting to run low. But the mother had decorated the cabin with the little they had, and the father had brought home a small spruce tree from the forest.
An Unexpected Guest
Christmas Eve arrived with a stillness found only in the winter mountains. The family sat together at the table, where a small bowl of soup and a piece of bread were all they had. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. The mother and father looked at each other in wonder β who could be out on a night like this?
When they opened the door, an old man stood there, dressed in a worn cloak, his long white beard glittering with frost. He looked tired, but his eyes shone warmly.
"Good evening," he said in a gentle voice. "I am a lonely wanderer. Might I rest here for the night?"
The father hesitated for a moment, but the mother smiled and opened the door wide.
"Of course, come in and warm yourself," she said.
The man sat down by the fireplace, and little Anna watched him with wide eyes.
"Are you a Christmas gnome?" she whispered.
The man chuckled quietly.
"Maybe so," he answered, warming his hands by the flames.
The Magic of Christmas
The family shared the little they had with the man, and he thanked them warmly for their hospitality. After the meal, he began telling stories. He spoke of the stars glittering in the sky, of people he had met, and of miracles that happen when least expected. Anna listened, fascinated, and even the parents felt a warmth fill the room.
Before the family went to bed, the man placed his hand on Anna's head.
"Thank you for opening your home and your hearts," he said. "I will make sure you always have something to celebrate."
When morning came, the man was gone. But to the family's surprise, a basket lay in front of the door, filled with food, warm clothes, and firewood. In the middle of the basket lay a golden star that shone in the faint morning light.
A New Hope
The family was speechless.
"That was no ordinary man," said the mother.
The father nodded.
"That was a Christmas guest," he said with a smile.
The little family celebrated Christmas with gratitude in their hearts and the star at the top of the tree. From that day on, they knew that Christmas is about more than food and gifts β it's about opening your heart to others.
