A hungry fox sneaks onto the farm on Christmas Eve to steal the gnome's porridge -- and ends up learning something about sharing instead.
Far out in the countryside, surrounded by snow-covered fields and dark forests, stood an old farm that had been in the family for generations. On this farm lived a gnome. He was small and grey, with a red cap poking out from under his bushy beard. He looked after the animals in the barn and helped keep the farm in order, but he asked for one thing in return: a bowl of steaming porridge every Christmas Eve.
On the other side of the forest, beneath a great frozen tangle of upturned roots, lived a fox. He could smell a hen house from across the valley and slip away again without leaving a single track in the dust. But this winter the snow had fallen heavily, and the fox was struggling to find anything to eat. He knew about the farm and the gnome, and on this Christmas Eve he decided to sneak over there to find something to eat.
An Unexpected Visitor
As night fell, the gnome lay in the barn waiting for his porridge. He could hear the family inside the house singing carols and laughing, while the smell of Christmas food filled the air. The gnome smiled. He knew the porridge would be set out soon.
The fox, meanwhile, crept through the forest. He moved carefully, his nose held high in the air, until at last he reached the barn. There he saw a little bowl of porridge steaming on a stump outside the door. The fox licked his lips and thought:
"This must be my lucky night!"
He crept closer to the bowl, but just then the gnome leapt out from the shadows.
"What do you think you're doing?" the gnome asked in a stern voice.
The fox froze, but after a moment he smiled slyly.
"I'm hungry, dear gnome," he answered. "Couldn't we share the porridge?"
An Unusual Deal
The gnome studied the fox carefully. He had never shared his porridge with anyone, but he had seen how thin the hares had grown out in the forest.
"If you promise never to bother the animals on my farm, we can share the porridge," said the gnome.
The fox tilted his head and weighed it up. The farm animals were well fed and well guarded -- hardly worth the chase anyway.
"I promise, dear gnome," said the fox, bowing his head.
The gnome fetched a second spoon, and the two of them sat down together to share the porridge. The fox licked the bowl completely clean, and the gnome nodded.
"You keep your promise, and I'll keep mine," he said.
The Magic of Christmas
When the porridge was finished, the fox leaned back with a contented sigh.
"You're a wise one, gnome," he said. "And half a bowl beats an empty one."
The gnome laughed.
"Christmas is about taking care of one another, whether you're a person, a farm animal, or a fox," he said.
The fox thanked him for the meal and went back to the forest, while the gnome tidied up the bowl and returned to the barn. From that day on, the fox kept his promise, and the animals on the farm lived in peace.
