Three friends spend Halloween night in the old school in town to find out whether the rumors about it coming to life are true.
It was Halloween, and the old school in town stood empty and dark, just as it had for decades. But rumors spread among the children: on Halloween night, the school came to life. Some said the chalkboards wrote on their own, while others claimed to have heard footsteps in the empty hallways.
Mikkel, Sofie, and Ingrid had collected every version of the rumor at school that week. "What if we spend the night there and find out what's going on?" Mikkel suggested with a crooked smile.
"Are you sure? What if the rumors are true?" Sofie asked nervously.
"It's probably just old stories," said Ingrid, adjusting the hood of her witch costume. "Let's find out."
The three friends met at the school entrance just before midnight. Mikkel brought a flashlight, Sofie brought a bag of candy, and Ingrid brought a notebook to write down everything they discovered. The old door creaked as they opened it, and a cool breeze met them.
"It smells⦠like dust and something else," said Sofie, wrinkling her nose.
"It's just your imagination," Mikkel replied. "Come on, we have to explore."
The hallways were dark, and the flashlight beam cast long shadows on the walls. They went into what had once been the classroom for the youngest students. Rows of desks still stood there, and an old chalkboard covered the front wall.
"Look! Something's moving over there," Ingrid whispered, pointing at the chalkboard.
The School's Secrets
Suddenly, the chalkboard began writing on its own. Large, white letters appeared: "Why are you here?" The children grabbed each other's hands and stared at the letters.
"Is this a prank?" Sofie asked in a shaky voice.
"That can't be possible," said Mikkel, but he stepped closer to look. "Who's writing this?"
The chalkboard answered: "We guard the school's secrets. If you wish to stay, you must show respect."
Ingrid took out her notebook and began writing down what was happening. "What kind of secrets?" she asked aloud.
Suddenly a book fell from a shelf, and an old clock in the room began counting down. "You have until midnight. Find the key to solve the mystery, or become part of us."
"What do they mean by 'part of us'?" Sofie asked, stepping back closer to her friends.
"It's just meant to scare us," said Mikkel, and he held the flashlight a little tighter.
Mikkel pulled the books off the shelf one by one, and dust rose through the flashlight beam. Sofie tugged at a desk drawer until it slid open with a groan, empty. Then Ingrid lifted the lid of the teacher's desk and took out an old flashlight with a symbol carved into the handle. "Look here! This could be a clue," she said.

Solving the Riddle
They followed the symbols on the flashlight, which led them through the hallways to the school's old library. There they found a large book with golden letters: "The School's Promise." When they opened it, the pages began to glow, and the text changed before their eyes.
"Respect, knowledge, and unity," Ingrid read aloud. "That's the school's secret."
One last sentence appeared on the page: "Say these words together, and the school will let you go."
The children formed a circle and held hands. Together they said: "Respect, knowledge, and unity."
The clock, which had nearly reached midnight, stopped. The light in the library dimmed, and a warm, friendly voice filled the room: "You have shown that you understand the school's heart. Go, and share what you have learned."
The library door opened, and the children ran out of the school. Once outside, they could see that the building seemed calmer, almost as if it had fallen back asleep.
"Do you think we really solved the mystery?" Sofie asked.
"Maybe," Ingrid answered with a smile. "But I think the school will remember us."
The three friends walked home under the clear Halloween night, ready for new adventures.
"Next time you hear about an old school, remember: some places live on through the memories they've created."
