Two friends carve the strangest, biggest pumpkin they've ever seen for Halloween -- and discover its flame is the only thing keeping ancient shadows away.
Once upon a time there were two friends, Nora and Tobias, who loved Halloween more than anything. Every year they competed to carve the scariest jack-o'-lantern. But this Halloween was different. When they went to the local farmer to pick up a pumpkin, they found one that was much bigger and stranger than all the others.
"Look at this, Tobias! It's gigantic!" Nora exclaimed, pointing at the huge, lopsided pumpkin sitting alone in a corner of the field.
Tobias looked at it doubtfully. "It looks... different. Like it's watching us." He laughed nervously, but Nora had already made up her mind.
"This is perfect! We're going to win the prize for the best jack-o'-lantern this year!"
They dragged the enormous pumpkin home to Nora's garage. It took them hours to hollow it out and carve the face, but at last it was done. The glowing lantern looked almost alive. Its face was twisted into a frightening, yet oddly friendly, grin.
"This is going to be the best Halloween ever," Nora said happily. Tobias nodded, though he couldn't shake off a strange feeling. There was something... not normal about this pumpkin.
Tobias began to notice that the garage felt unusually cold, even though no window was open. "Is it just me, or does this place feel strange?" he asked.
"Relax, Tobias," Nora said. "You just scare easily."
But even Nora had to admit the atmosphere was unusual. Once they'd finished carving, they sat staring at it as it glowed in the dark. It was almost hypnotic.
Suddenly they heard a low sound, like a sigh. "What was that?" Tobias jumped up, but Nora just shrugged.
"Probably just the wind," she said, though her heart was beating a little faster.
They decided to leave the jack-o'-lantern in the garage for the night and switched off the light.
An Unusual Jack-o'-Lantern
"Turn it off, Nora. It's late," Tobias said as night fell. "We can show it off tomorrow."
Nora switched off the light and closed the garage door. But as they were on their way out, something strange happened. The glow from the jack-o'-lantern began to shine again, all on its own.
"What on earth?" Nora looked back.
She went back to the pumpkin and switched off the light again. But the moment she turned away, it glowed even brighter than before.
"Maybe there's something wrong with the light?" Tobias suggested, but Nora shook her head.
"That's impossible. We took the batteries out!"
The light began to flicker, almost as if the pumpkin were trying to communicate. Then they heard a faint, whispering voice.
"Don't put me out... I have a job to do."
The two friends jumped backward. "Who said that?" Tobias shouted.
The voice came again, faint but clear: "I'm not an ordinary pumpkin. I have to shine tonight to protect this town."
"What do you mean?" Nora asked.
The pumpkin's glow grew stronger. "There's an old curse over this town. Every Halloween the shadows try to take over. My flame keeps them away."
"The shadows?" Tobias frowned. "This sounds like a joke."
Suddenly a cold wind blew through the garage, and the lights began to flicker. Dark shadows moved along the walls, as if they were alive.
"I don't think it's a joke," Nora said, staring at the dancing shadows. "What should we do?"
"Protect the flame," the pumpkin said. "If the light goes out, the shadows will win."
The two friends looked around for something they could use to protect the pumpkin. Tobias found an old glass dome in the garage and placed it over the flame.
"This should help, right?" he asked.
The pumpkin's glow steadied for a moment, but the shadows didn't fully retreat. They kept circling the garage, and the whispers grew louder.

The Battle Against the Shadows
Nora and Tobias decided to stay by the pumpkin all night. They watched as the flame glowed and the shadows tried to reach it, but every time they got close, they were pushed back by the light.
"We can't keep this up all night!" Tobias shouted. The shadows grew stronger, and the wind outside howled like a wolf.
Nora thought fast. "We need to strengthen the flame. Maybe if we add more light, we can drive the shadows away for good."
They gathered every flashlight, candle, and torch they could find and placed them around the jack-o'-lantern. The flame inside the pumpkin grew, and light filled the whole garage.
The shadows screamed and pulled back. One by one they vanished into the night, until everything was still.
"We did it," Tobias whispered, sinking to the floor.
The pumpkin glowed faintly. "Thank you," it said. "You've saved the town."
The next morning, when they woke up, the pumpkin was gone. All that remained was a small flame still burning on the floor. Nora picked it up and placed it in a glass jar.
"What should we do with it?" Tobias asked.
"We'll keep it safe," Nora answered with a smile. "Just in case."
Later that day they went back to the field where they had found the pumpkin. They looked for signs of other unusual pumpkins, but everything looked normal. An old man who owned the farm waved them over.
"You chose the right one," he said with a mysterious smile. "That pumpkin has been here for generations, and only the bravest know how to use it properly."
Nora and Tobias exchanged glances, unsure what to believe.
Next Halloween, remember: not every light is meant to go out.
