A shepherd who likes to trick the villagers with false cries of wolf learns the hard way what happens when no one believes him anymore.
Once upon a time, there was a young shepherd who watched over his sheep every day in a large meadow. The days were long and lonely, and the shepherd often grew bored. One day, he had an idea to entertain himself.
"What if I shout that the wolf is coming? Then the villagers will come running!" he thought.
The shepherd put his plan into action.
"The wolf is coming! Help! The wolf is taking my sheep!" he shouted loudly.
The villagers ran to help him, but when they arrived, they found no wolf. The shepherd laughed and laughed.
"I fooled you!" he said with a big grin.
A few days later, the shepherd decided to do the same thing again. He shouted:
"The wolf is coming! The wolf is coming! Help me!"
The villagers came running again, but this time too it was just a joke. The villagers grew angry.
"This isn't funny! If you keep lying, we won't believe you anymore!" they warned him.
The shepherd paid no attention to the warning and laughed to himself.
A week later, a wolf actually appeared. It crept closer to the sheep, and the shepherd was terrified.
"Help! The wolf is coming! It's true this time!" he shouted.
But the villagers, who had already been fooled twice before, ignored him. The wolf attacked the sheep and chased them away, while the shepherd was left standing alone, in despair.
The Moral
Honesty Lasts Longest
The Shepherd and the Wolf teaches us that if we lie too often, no one will believe us when we finally tell the truth.
This is a free adaptation of Aesop's classic fable from ancient Greece.
