The Squirrel and the Fox in the Storm

When a powerful storm threatens the forest, the squirrel Emil and the fox must work together to save the animals and trees they love.

In a lush Norwegian forest where silence usually reigned, lived the squirrel Emil. Emil could gather a whole winter's worth of nuts and weave a nest that held fast in the rain, but when the other animals called up to him, he stayed high in his tree and pretended not to hear. In the same forest lived Fox, who was always first down the forest paths and made up his mind before anyone had finished asking the question.

One day, while Emil was climbing one of the oldest trees in the forest, he noticed the wind starting to pick up. The green leaves rustled violently, and the birds flew low, as if they knew something dangerous was coming.

An unexpected danger

The Squirrel and the Fox in the Storm

Fox came running through the forest, his tail whirling up leaves and small branches.

"Emil!" he called up into the tree. "Have you seen the storm coming?"

Emil looked toward the horizon, where dark clouds were gathering.

"It looks like a powerful storm," he said. "What should we do?"

Fox stopped and thought for a moment.

"We need to gather the animals and protect the forest. If we don't do something, the storm could tear up the oldest trees and destroy our homes."

Emil nodded hesitantly.

"But how can I help? I'm just a little squirrel."

Fox smiled.

"You're quick and good at talking to the birds. I need you, Emil."

The struggle begins

Together the two friends made a plan. Emil climbed quickly through the trees and warned the birds to move their nests to safer branches. The birds, who trusted the squirrel, warned the other animals of the danger. On the ground, Fox gathered the larger animals: deer, badgers, and other foxes.

"We need to protect the roots of the trees," Fox said. "If we dig around the roots and cover them with soil and leaves, we can keep them from toppling over."

The animals began to work together. Even the badger, who was usually grumpy, dug energetically to help. Emil led the birds in gathering small branches and leaves to strengthen nests and shore up weak branches that might break.

The storm's fury

As night fell, the storm reached its peak. The trees swayed violently, and the wind howled like a wild beast. Emil and Fox worked tirelessly, but they grew tired. At one point a large branch broke loose and fell near Fox. Emil threw himself forward and pushed the fox out of the way.

"Watch out, Fox!" Emil cried.

Fox laughed nervously.

"I'll be careful. Thank you, Emil."

Despite the storm's strength, the animals kept working. The birds circled and sang to keep everyone's spirits up, while the deer used their antlers to prop up weaker trees.

Morning breaks

When the sun finally rose, the storm had calmed. The forest was damaged, but the biggest and oldest trees still stood. Emil and Fox gathered the animals in a clearing to thank them.

"We did it," Fox said. "Together we saved the forest."

Emil came down from his branch and stepped in among the others.

"Look," he said, pointing up. "The birds are already carrying twigs back to the old tree."

The animals cheered, and from that day on, whenever the wind rose, the forest looked for Emil and Fox.

Moral of the story

Community and teamwork can overcome even the greatest challenges. When we work together, we are stronger than we could ever be alone.
