Deep in the north lies Santa's magical workshop, where laughter, starlight and a song are needed to get the gifts out in time.
Far up in the northernmost corner of the world, where the night sky was always filled with dancing northern lights, stood Santa's workshop. It was a wonderful place, built like a big, red wooden cabin surrounded by snow-covered trees. But the workshop was far from ordinary -- it was magical. Once you stepped inside, the whole building seemed to stretch on forever, with hundreds of rooms full of small, busy elves.
These elves were no ordinary workers. Each one had their own talent. Some were experts at making dolls, others at building trains that could really run, and some created wonderful games that could enchant even the pickiest children. Santa himself, with his round face and warm smile, sat at a large, old desk reading wish lists from all over the world.
A Hectic Time
This Christmas, the workshop was busier than ever. Laughter and song filled the air as the elves dashed around to finish the gifts in time. The bells in the ceiling rang in time with the Christmas music, and the sweet smell of gingerbread filled the room.
But in the middle of all the bustle, one of the biggest machines suddenly stopped with a loud bang. It was the machine that packed the gifts into magical sacks, and without it, no gifts could be delivered. The elves froze, and Santa stood up, worried.
"What happened?" he asked in his deep voice.
The oldest elf, LΓΈkke, walked over to the machine. She tapped it gently with her little hammer and listened.
"The machine has lost its magic," she said seriously. "We need something special to start it up again."
The Search for Christmas Joy
Santa nodded.
"What do we need, LΓΈkke?"
The elf smiled faintly.
"We need three things that represent the joy of Christmas: a child's laughter, the light of a star, and a song that warms the heart."
The elves scattered in every direction. In the nearest town, a girl tumbled laughing into a snowdrift, and a small elf snapped the lid on his glass jar before the sound could escape. Others set off for the forest, where the starlight lay thickest between the trees. By the fireplace, three elves hummed a tune, stopped, and began again, until the melody made them all go quiet.
After many hours, they came back, one by one. One elf carried a golden star that glowed like the sun. And last of all came LΓΈkke's group, singing the melody until the whole workshop stopped to listen.
The Magic Returns
LΓΈkke carefully placed the star, the jar of laughter, and the melody into the machine's heart. The whole workshop held its breath. Suddenly the machine began to glow. It shook and spun, and a rainbow of light burst out of it. The elves cheered as it started up again, faster and stronger than before.
Santa laughed loudly and clapped his hands.
"You've saved Christmas!" he said.
A Memorable Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve, Santa stood ready with his big sleigh, filled to the brim with gifts. The reindeer stood proudly in front of the sleigh, ready to fly. Santa waved to the elves, who had gathered outside the workshop to say goodbye.
"Merry Christmas to all of you!" he called.
As the sleigh took off and flew toward the stars, the elves could hear him call out:
"Ho, ho, ho!"
